Week in Review and the Week Ahead

So Plympton, Jonathan and I went to the community meeting regarding Westcrest Park on Saturday morning.  I was glad I went because it is obvious that the neighbors are very on board with having a new disc course at the park while the Parks Department and their outside project management firm clearly already have their own agenda.  Without going into too much detail here, I urge you all to join us at the next meeting which will most likely be in April.  I will remind everyone via this blog as to the exact time and date when announced.  If the disc golf community shows up like we did at the meeting on Saturday they will not be able to ignore us.  We dominated the room in numbers and kudos to everyone for being open minded to the concerns of everyone involved.  It will be close to a calendar year before the works project truly launches so we have time to make this happen.  If we can continue to win over the neighborhood I think we can see something exciting happen here.

Schedule this week will be Wednesday night at 7pm at Lakewood again.  Meet at Hole 14.  Then on Saturday at 11am we will be playing Sea-Tac.

One last note is that the Bag Tag Challenge has officially kicked off.  The only challenge played was on Wednesday when Matt challenged me at Sea-Tac.  I finished with a 68-85 win to preserve my #1 Ranking for now.  Make sure you all let me know when you get your challenges played.

EDIT: Plympton was apparently challenged by Weaver during our game on Saturday.  Weaver won 63-74 which means they should have swapped tags.  Weaver is now #4 with Plympton dropping to #7.

Roundbrand Results! 2/15/09 @ Terrace Creek

Terrace Creek in Mountlake Terrace was the site of our round Sunday.  It is our third time playing there over 16 months and it has been different each time.  The back 9 has been radically changed and I liked it much better than before.  It still has some issues compared to other courses, but I will be more inclined to go back after seeing what they have done and are planning on doing there.

We had a decent showing of seven of us, but Plympton’s back did not allow him to play beyond the front 9.  We also had a first time player in Kermit.  All told it was a nice day to be out as it was cold but not bitter and the rain stayed away until we finished.

Scores are below the fold.

Roundbrand Results! 2/8/09

We had the usual suspects out for a cool round of Disc Golf on Sunday at Lakewood.  Dean was a champ for dragging himself out to play even though he was not feeling too well.  Overall it was a fairly well played round even though it may have lacked a bit on the spectacular side.

Jonathan had a couple of amazing tee shots.  His drive on Hole 2 dropped just down the hill a bit from the basket setting them up for birdie.  He also drove almost to the pine tree on Hole 14.  Sadly, his longest drive of the day may have been on Hole 15 as he threw his Tee-Rex into the middle of the muck pond.  Or it may have been Hole 5 when he threw his disc almost all the way to the long basket.

Mikayla and I managed to take the day by being very steady with our shots.  My second shots seemed to return to my arsenal after disappearing last week.  We had decent success putting too which may have been the difference in this game at the end.

Roundbrand Results! 2/1/09 @ White River

We have not had many chances to play White River straight up with no teams and I really wanted to give it a go.  As a group we have had our best team scores at this course and I really wanted to see how some of us would perform playing it alone.  Well, we only had four of us out for this game and the results were mixed to say the least.

Jonathan had a solid game save a couple of holes.  Hole 7 in particular did him no favors as he hit a tree on four successive shots.  However, beyond that blip he played a very solid round.  His putting was a little off at times, but his score was actually very respectable.

As for myself, I played great the first 6 holes and the terrible for the next 12.  For whatever reason I was not getting my usual quality out of my second shots which was leaving me attempting to approach on my third shot quite regularly.  When you play this course without a teammate it becomes apparent fast that one bad shot can really bury you in the woods and I had plenty of bad shots.

Now for the success stories of the day.  Cathy played a nice round overall, but her back 9 was particularly strong.  She made very few mistakes and kept her discs in the fairway throughout.  She gave me a great run for second place and did it all on a gimpy knee that was barking at her.

Lastly, Les showed himself to be a quick student in only his third time out with us.  He is already grasping the basics in terms of wrist snap and release points.  Given some practice I expect Les to be able to compete at a high level in a short period of time.  As you can see in the scores he really hung in there well for being so new to the game.  To only have four holes that went worse than bogey is great for someone so new to the game.

Roundbrand Results! 1/18/09 @ North Sea-Tac

We had an absolutely gorgeous day for Disc Golf on Sunday.  We moved our game over to North Sea-Tac because they were playing an Acepot at Lakewood.  It was a good day to attack this difficult course as there was little wind and the sun was shining the whole game.  It was actually warm enough that I never even had to put on my jacket.

If nothing else this game proved that as a group we are getting better.  I recently completed a list of the Top 10 scores the Roundbrand folks have scored at all of our regular courses.  On this day three of our four teams made it into that Top 10 and the last team just barely missed making the list.  In fact Dean and random newcomer Mike S set a Roundbrand record on the day for a two person team.

Mike S showed up at the first tee by himself and we convinced him to join our game as we had been sitting at an odd number of players.  He is a very good player and teaming him with Dean gave them a solid duo.  We also had Les out to join us for the first time in almost a year and a half and he had a fine day putting.

All told I did not see much of the other group play, but as you can see in the scores Mike S and Dean sat at even after 10 holes which is rather impressive.  To bag three birdies on this course is a darn good showing that I hope to someday reproduce.  As for the rest of us we battled it out for second place and it was close.  Thanks to some solid putting on the Back 9 Les and I were able to sneak out of there with a very solid score.  Jonathan and Linda also had a very fine showing on the day.  Someday we will crack our way into the 50′s on the course.  Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Scores are below the fold.

Roundbrand Results! 1/11/09 @ White River

We had a great round of Disc Golf on Sunday at White River.  It had all of the elements that you look for in a Roundbrand game.  We had a new player in Adam, we had a close game that came down to the last shot and most of all we had flooding that caused Hole 16 to be out of commission.

Adam teamed with me and he played very well.  Without some of Adam’s shots we would not have had a chance at taking the game.  We jumped out to an early lead and played hang on for the rest of the day.  As you will see in the scores it looked like we might be sitting pretty after the front 9, but it was not over so quickly.  Dean, playing as a California Double, and the team of Jonathan & Mikayla had strong games in them that allowed them to pull close as the game went on.

After 14 holes Dean had pulled in to a tie with us and Jonathan & Mikayla were a mere stroke behind.  All three teams matched each other shot for shot on the scorecard over the next 3 holes.  We all walked to the 18th hole with just one stroke seperating us.  A solid drive, approach & putt game netted Adam & I a par.  Dean had a good second shot that put him in range to par, but his putts came up just short dropping him out of the lead.  Jonathan & Mikayla had a drive that put them in birdie position, but once again putts that fell shy by inches cost them a chance to tie.

With those misses Adam and I won the game with an exhale.

Roundbrand Results! 1/4/09 @ North Sea-Tac

We had a small showing on Sunday as five of us turned out to North Sea-Tac for a game in the cold.  The good news was that we had very little wind and no rain so for the first week of January the conditions were perfect.

Overall this was an ok round but not an amazing one.  Dean and I managed to get a decent score that was based solely off of solid mid-range play and some good long putts.  Only getting two double bogeys on the day was a nice feeling that I rarely get at this brutal course.

No one really played well off of the tee.   We were also definitely rusty on avoiding the many trees at this course.  Jonathan in particular seemed to be catching a lot of wood on his shots.  All told a nice round.

Two other things, no evening round this week and keep an eye out for a new page on the site.  I am going to go back through all of our old scorecards to create a Top Ten Scores for each course we have played.  If any of you have some old scorecards that have better scores than I end up posting please pass them on to me so I can add them in.

Here are the scores.

Roundbrand Rankings 12/29/08 and Other Stuff

Well, we managed to get a game in yesterday that a whole three of us showed up for.  It was not pretty and so it will not be deserving of a full recap.  Suffice it to say that none of us played well.  Plympton and I could not drive all day and Jonathan’s normally trusty putt was not in sight.  Lakewood will not get the best of us like that anytime soon.  However, between the wet and cold we survived and managed to not lose any discs unlike some other players we saw on the course yesterday.

As for future games I am contemplating an evening game on New Years Eve.  Maybe 6PM at Sea-Tac.  It looks like we may have a few hours of not too much rain that evening.  Give us a chance to get the blood flowing before we head off to various parties.

Also, I am hoping to do the New Year’s Day game like we did last year.  For that one I am shooting for a 1:30PM Tee time at Lakewood.

Lastly, here is the final Ranking for 2008.  End of month accounting will kick in next week.  I expect it to help Richard and Cathy in particular.  Speaking of, Richard and Plympton flopped spots once again as the only movement on the board.  Leaderboard is below the fold.
