Disc Golf Recap 4/13/08 @ White River & Lake Fenwick

Well, we knew it would happen eventually. However we did not see it happening so forcefully. Sometimes words fall short of describing a butt kicking like was doled out on Sunday at White River. I have been wanting to do some amazing write up for this because a barrier has been crossed for the Roundbrand crew, but time just never seems to be on my side. In short, after taking our beatings a few of us went to Lake Fenwick only to have it continue. Jonathan is REAL good. However, moment of silence for the river eating his Destroyer.

It was awesome to have Richard and Sarah join us for the first time. Cathy also made it out again, so all told we had 10 of us on the course. Great turnout! In general we played quite well, but Jonathan & Dad went under par to take the cake.

Afterwards we had a go for 11 holes at Fenwick and Jonathan and Cathy went under par on the final hole there. We were joined by Alan and his son Jason who I hope will join us again soon. Regrettably the rains came and removed any chance of catching up with Jonathan.

Here are the scores.

Disc Golf Recap 4/10/08 @ Lakewood

We had a nice after work round last Thursday at Lakewood with the same 6 people from the previous week. The good news was that I stayed in bounds for most of the round. The bad news was that Kara lost her Eagle in the mucky pond while shooting towards hole 15. Overall it was a well played round, but Jonathan and Ethan absolutely crushed us with an error free day.

Disc Golf Recap 4/6/08 @ North Sea-Tac

Let me just say that yesterday’s Roundbrand Disc Golf outing was one of my favorites yet. The only two things it truly missed were regulars Jonathan & Weaver. This round had it all. Amazing shots, overall good play and a very competitive finish. We were hit with a little rain here and there, but for the most part we seemed to avoid the predicted downpour. It was very cold by the end of the day, and as seems to be the norm, North Sea-Tac was very windy. That always seems to make putting an adventure.

You will notice Linda on the scorecard of two teams below. That is because she helped me through the first five holes before Ethan arrived. We knew he would be arriving late and had decided to add him on to the team that was sitting in last. As luck would have it, two teams were tied for last when he met up with us at Hole 6. So a coin was tossed and he was added to my team while Linda moved over to join “Team Nibs.”

Shot of the Day #1 – For those of you who have seen a pro play Hole 2 at Sea-Tac, you have seen someone calmly toss a shot over the huge mess of trees and bushes onto the green. For those of us who are less skilled we must play left of the trees and turn hard right back to the hole. That is what Kara and Nani had done. After 3 shots they were behind the tree next to the OB line at the mouth of the putting area. Nani calmly reached around the tree and with a flick of her wrist dropped a 42ft shot into the basket to save Bogey. It was an incredible shot for sure, and yet it was soon to be outmatched.

Shot of the Day #2 – On Hole 5 you have one of the very few chances at Sea-Tac to get a potential Birdie or at least a somewhat easy Par. Well, Jason and Dean had made a safe tee shot that left them away for their second shot. Off to the right hand side they had to shoot toward the trees that surround the basket. Jason calmly put a nice S-curve on his forehand shot that went between the big tree on the left and the many little trees on the right. His Innova Orc DX then lost speed and dropped down and hard right into the basket for a 145ft Birdie. Honestly, this is the kind of shot that you hope to see someone make every time you play this game. Ethan said he could hear us all hooting and hollering from the parking lot. It is only Jason’s second time out with us, but he has shown already that with a little practice he will be formidable foe.

As you can see below, all three teams finished within 3 strokes of each other. After having a 4 stroke lead through 9, Jason and Dean allowed Ethan and I to slowly whittle away at their lead. If not for Ethan getting on a roll, we would have been lost. However, after sitting one back for 4 straight holes we passed the leaders on 18 by getting a Bogey to their Triple Bogey.

Here are the scores.

Disc Golf Recap – 3/9/08 @ Lakewood

Well we were pleased once again to see the weatherman be wrong. It was a very nice day out and we had eight of us show up to play a great round at Lakewood. Ethan has not been out for a while due to grad school keeping him so busy. This round was one for knocking off the rust for him. Nani was only able to hang for 7 holes because of a meeting she had to run to, but she helped her team out while she was there. Dad tried to get a 10 stroke Handicap for Mom and him, but as you can see by the scores below, that was not needed.

Highlights of the day had to be seeing both Mom and Dad getting nice length on their drives. Mom was throwing so smooth and easy it didn’t even look like she was trying. Mikayla had some nice throws herself, but it was some clutch long putts that were the most impressive from her. I made the shot of my life on the 13th Hole. My drive went deep but OB. They moved the hole forward recently and next to the tree leaving me with an 80′ uphill shot and the basket sitting on the opposite side of the tree. I decided to use my Aerobie Sharpshooter #2. Yeah, not a great Disc, but when it loses speed it fades very hard making it the perfect play for where I was. I got my shot long and high enough and it broke hard left around the tree and in the basket to save par. I admit I did a little dance.

Jonathan was the winner once again. Bow down, blah, blah, blah. Here are the scores.

Round two at Lakewood Park – Weaver & Jonathan

By the time our group had finished up playing Mineral Springs Park the sky was beautiful and the sun was out. Mike and I chose to head over to Lakewood Park in West Seattle (White Center area) to take advantage of the perfect disc golf weather. The front nine went quick and we thought we might even finish the course with the sun still in the sky. But that just did not happen. It got dark quick and we played Continue reading

Upcoming Rounds – Sunday 12/30 & Tuesday 1/1

Alright Disc Golfers let’s end 2007 and start 2008 off right. We will be playing two rounds in the next 7 days. First a quick recap of 2007.

For those of you who do not know us at RoundBrand, other than Kara we are all new to the game of Disc Golf this year. Kara and I moved into Boulevard Park in January and one fine Sunday morning in February we took Jabu for a long walk through North Sea-Tac Park. We came upon the 18 hole course there and Kara explained the game to me. I have always enjoyed playing catch with Frisbees and Ultimate was a lot of fun before my knee went kaput, so I decided to give it a try. Our first couple of goes were with regular Frisbees, but soon we purchased our first Discs and started playing regularly. I am officially hooked. For years I have stoked my competitive fires by watching baseball and football, but this is the most enjoyable past time I have found yet. Largely the reason this has gripped me is because I am out doing something rather than observing. I will always enjoy viewing high level competition, but it is so much better to be off the couch than on it. Disc Golf is easy on the body, it is competitive, it is a walk in the park and a chance to hang with friends.

In 2007 we have introduced the game to many family and friends. On any given weekend you can find myself, Kara, Jonathan, Mikayla, Dean, Linda, Ethan & Nani, Mike & Maureen, Mike Weaver, John Neuharth, Logan, Les LeMieux, Patrick, Lisa & Avellina, Vince, Wendy, Tripp & Meaghan out playing Disc Golf. I hope I did not miss any regulars in that list. Hopefully in 2008 and we can grow our little club even more. There have been a lot of lost and found Discs this year, especially at Sea-Tac. Most of all though, we have had a blast getting together and enjoying each other’s company.

Jonathan and I are working hard to make this site a useful tool for finding places to play and links to events in the area. Watch for exciting new additions and for many great rounds of Disc Golf in 2008.

As for the upcoming rounds, I am excited to give my new Star Valkyrie and Warlock Putter a go this week. We are officially into Winter now, so while I am sure it will be wet and cold for awhile still, the days are getting longer. That means more options for where and when to play. This Sunday the 30th we will go for a 1:30PM Tee Time at North Sea-Tac. I figured we should end 2007 where it started for us. Dress warm and dry for this one because the forecast is nasty.

Our first round of 2008 will be on Tuesday the 1st at Lakewood. Tee time is 1PM. Let’s start the year off with a bang and get some scores in the 60′s!

The Sidewinder & the Beast – 2 New Discs

I have been looking for the perfect distance driver for a while. I really like my current line-up but really wanted to find that dare-to-be-great disc that would fly flat and fast. A perfect long-drive-killer for t-shots like the #12 at Lakewood. What I found were two INNOVA distance drivers. The first is a bright salmon colored Champion Sidewinder weighing it at 165gm & the second is a green and purple Champion Beast weighing in at 168gm. The aerodynamics on the Beast are promising with my current t-shot style. I am looking forward to Lakewood this weekend to give them both a spin.

Ooooh, I want this Disc!

Check this thing out. Apparently the PDGA approved it and then changed their mind three days later. It would be perfect for my overhand putt, and the notches would be great at grabbing the chains. Illegal, yes. But why would I let that stop me?

All By Myself – a Quick Game of Folf

All hopped up on caffeine I traded my keyboard for my steering wheel and shot down 1st Ave toward Lakewood Park. I had one goal in mind. Improve my long game. After losing my neon green Star Valkyrie a couple of weeks ago due to a bad case of shanks my father gave me a JK Pro Valkyrie (a discontinued model disc) as a replacement. To my surprise and his, I threw it very well. This disc flies very straight for me. Today I found that I can also get some well shaped fades at high speed and a few favorable rolls. My long game, I am pleased to say, was well improved by the 18th hole.

Here is a recap for the full 18.

  1. 4 – tee shot hit trees – short tee
  2. 4 – long tee but over threw the putt
  3. 4 – perfect tee – over threw putt
  4. 4 – very long drive – hit a tree and shorted putt
  5. 3 – long tee
  6. 5 – 150ft+ roll – over threw putt
  7. 5 – lofted it into a tree where it was stuck – hit trees (ARRRGH!)
  8. 4 – beautiful putt was ejected – I was robbed!
  9. 3 – long tee shot made for easy approach and putt
  10. 4 – over threw putt
  11. 4 – over threw putt
  12. 4 – good long tee – good second – poor short game
  13. 4 – shanked tee shot – skipped second shot way past hole – on three hit the post
  14. 4 – long tee shot – long second that cleared tree landing just under hole side of tree – 3rd hit chain and bounced out
  15. 3 – long tee – second hit outer basket cage
  16. 4 – long tee – got well inside of over growth but stuck behind tree – next shot hit bush – lay-up on three
  17. 4 – rolled tee shot – 2nd lay-up – 3rd bounced off chain
  18. 4 – tee hit large tree just 40ft off – 2nd good long shot – 3rd hit the marker (18) above the basket

Front – 36

Back – 35

Total – 71

Folfling Technique – Forehand and Backhand

Now I am not one to follow rules so this is going to be on of those, “Do as I teach and not as I do” situations. I have found many resources for the proper Forehand throwing technique and the best yet is found on the INNOVA Disc Golf site.

I am an avid forehand thrower but have learned that in some situations, such as our recent Northgate round, that tight fairways and my form of forehand don’t mix well. So I have been learning to do a little backhand work which is currently pretty ugly.

My advice for anyone looking to improve their throw is find out what works for you and practice in the open to start, then challenge yourself to a course or two.

Enjoy your folfing!
