Disc Golf Recap 12/30/07 – North Sea-Tac

Okay, it was really cold and windy yesterday. It wasn’t wet though. Even though I think we were all numb by the time we got to hole 16, upon reflection I feel like we all played quite well. The scores reflect that feeling. Jonathan and Mikayla had the lead after six holes before Ethan’s strong day pulled his team ahead. After that we were all playing chasers. Dad and I did have a very strong back 9 after a slow start, but in the end the team of Linda, Nani & Ethan ruled the day.

It is supposed to hit 51 tomorrow. I am excited to possibly play a round where my hands don’t turn blue. See you at 1PM at Lakewood and have a safe and Happy New Year!

Team: Ethan, Nani & Linda (76)

Upcoming Rounds – Sunday 12/30 & Tuesday 1/1

Alright Disc Golfers let’s end 2007 and start 2008 off right. We will be playing two rounds in the next 7 days. First a quick recap of 2007.

For those of you who do not know us at RoundBrand, other than Kara we are all new to the game of Disc Golf this year. Kara and I moved into Boulevard Park in January and one fine Sunday morning in February we took Jabu for a long walk through North Sea-Tac Park. We came upon the 18 hole course there and Kara explained the game to me. I have always enjoyed playing catch with Frisbees and Ultimate was a lot of fun before my knee went kaput, so I decided to give it a try. Our first couple of goes were with regular Frisbees, but soon we purchased our first Discs and started playing regularly. I am officially hooked. For years I have stoked my competitive fires by watching baseball and football, but this is the most enjoyable past time I have found yet. Largely the reason this has gripped me is because I am out doing something rather than observing. I will always enjoy viewing high level competition, but it is so much better to be off the couch than on it. Disc Golf is easy on the body, it is competitive, it is a walk in the park and a chance to hang with friends.

In 2007 we have introduced the game to many family and friends. On any given weekend you can find myself, Kara, Jonathan, Mikayla, Dean, Linda, Ethan & Nani, Mike & Maureen, Mike Weaver, John Neuharth, Logan, Les LeMieux, Patrick, Lisa & Avellina, Vince, Wendy, Tripp & Meaghan out playing Disc Golf. I hope I did not miss any regulars in that list. Hopefully in 2008 and we can grow our little club even more. There have been a lot of lost and found Discs this year, especially at Sea-Tac. Most of all though, we have had a blast getting together and enjoying each other’s company.

Jonathan and I are working hard to make this site a useful tool for finding places to play and links to events in the area. Watch for exciting new additions and for many great rounds of Disc Golf in 2008.

As for the upcoming rounds, I am excited to give my new Star Valkyrie and Warlock Putter a go this week. We are officially into Winter now, so while I am sure it will be wet and cold for awhile still, the days are getting longer. That means more options for where and when to play. This Sunday the 30th we will go for a 1:30PM Tee Time at North Sea-Tac. I figured we should end 2007 where it started for us. Dress warm and dry for this one because the forecast is nasty.

Our first round of 2008 will be on Tuesday the 1st at Lakewood. Tee time is 1PM. Let’s start the year off with a bang and get some scores in the 60′s!

Sunday Disc Golf in Seattle’s Cold Wet and Windy Weather!

There were 4 of us that turned out for disc golf today. I don’t blame those who bailed. The weather was unpleasant to say the least. The hoodie I wore is still saoking wet. I am not sure if Jeff, Dean and Linda kept there scores for the game but here are mine. Nothing to be proud of but not bad for playing with minor frost bite and the extra 10 pounds of soaking wet clothing. Cheers all and Happy Holidays from RoundBrand ;)

Next Disc Golf Round – Sunday 12/23

Hello Disc Golfers. No recap this week because Ethan and Jonathan did not get their scores to me. I can tell you I came in last with a 71. We were happy to only encounter some occasional sprinkles on the day. Ethan pulled an unusual feat by losing his Champion Valkyrie in the muck on 15 and finding a new one in the very same muck.

This Sunday will be our Christmas round of Disc Golf. We will be teeing it up at 10am again so we can all scatter to watch the Seahawks game at 1pm. Once again we are going to play Lakewood. It is looking like rain again, but we all may need to burn some calories before we fatten up on Christmas.

Mitchell Report

I have just skimmed through the Mitchell Report to see if any information regarding performance enhancing drugs had spilled over to other sports. I saw absolutely no reference to any Disc Golfers being implicated. For those of you on the PDGA Tour, yes, Ken Climo has been kicking your butt legally.

Disc Golf Recaps – 12/8 & 12/9

On Saturday we went and played Steilacoom as a family to celebrate Dad’s 60th Birthday. It was a long drive and very cold, but it was a gorgeous day to play disc golf. I can see why this is such a popular park. With alternate tee’s, more than 18 holes and variations on ways to play the course, you could feel like it is a new experience almost every time out.

However, as a first timer it was a bit confusing finding where I was going. You can see multiple baskets from every tee box. You are also shooting at or over other players fairly regularly.

All of that being said, we accidentally played the wrong hole on 13 pushing our game out to 19 holes. Of course Jonathan Birdied the 19th to tie me and force a playoff hole. It was a playoff to forget as we both chopped wood all the way to the bottom of a hill. In the end Jonathan proved victorious. He deserved it with 3 Birdies on the day.

On Sunday morning at 10am Jonathan, Mike Weaver and I met at North Sea-Tac for a round of frigid disc golf. It was coooooooold. Unlike Saturday the sun never really came out on Sunday. As usual Mike Weaver played a great round. North Sea-Tac can be an unforgiving course, but Mike consistently gets as far off the tee as I get in two shots. I finished with an 88 and Jonathan shot a 95. Warm up is something neither of us did. As far as I am concerned, Mike’s card is the only one worth taking a second look at.

Unity For a New Disc Golf Park in Seattle

Seattle is currently holding community meeting to get feedback on what the public would like to see done with several orphaned parks throughout the Seattle area. I have a contact that can assist in getting our group (need 50 people minimum) to submit a plan for the redevelopment of one or more of these park as a mixed use park to include a new disc golf course. Since I am not a public city planning savvy guy I need help organizing this as well as we need to start a petition. I need volunteers to help me kick this off NOW! The city will be making decisions early next year.

Just think, we could have a brand spankin’ new disc golf park here in the Seattle area! If you love the game and want to see the city get involved with our spot than please send me a message ASAP. I am looking forward to getting involved.

Next Round Sunday 12/9

We are going to play a morning round this week. Tee off is 10am at North Sea-Tac. The weather looks very promising at this time which is nice to see.

Our family is also celebrating our Dad’s 60th birthday this Saturday by going down to play Steilacoom. This will be my first go at what is rated the best course in the state. I am excited to try it out. We will definitely let you know how it goes.

Cancelled Round

I decided not to head out to Lakewood yesterday. I don’t know if anyone else made it, but since my yard was a bog I decided to forgo playing. Hopefully this doesn’t last for long because I really missed my weekly dose of disc golf. I seriously would have considered playing if the snow had stayed on the ground. That would have made for an interesting round. I will be keeping an eye on the weather as far as this upcoming weekend and let you know what we are planning.
